Food and Flowers Freedom Act To Become Law

Since 1946, Los Angeles has enforced an ordinance against the selling of home-grown fruit and vegetables but this looks like it is set to change.

The Los Angeles City Council has stated that it will be suspending the ordinance and bringing in the Food and Flowers Freedom Act to allow the growing of “”berries, flowers, fruits, greens, herbs, ornamental plants, mushrooms, nuts, seedlings or vegetables for use on-site or sale or distribution off-site,” according to the Los Angeles Times.

With this new legalization of ‘urban farming’ it will mean that the growing and selling of fruit and flowers within the city limits is now permitted.

Revisions to the Los Angeles Municipal Code will “clarify permitted truck gardening and farming uses in each zone, and create consistency between home occupation conditions and standards and truck gardening operations.”

According to Council President, Eric Garetti, the law will be good for green space, carbon reduction and local farmer’s markets saying: “It has the potential to really create economic benefits for local sustainable jobs.”

Garcetti also comments that he grew 80% of his own produce last year and that: “There was no better feeling. Everything tastes better when you pull it from the ground and you didn’t have go to the market to find something. You just go out to the garden to see what’s growing and blossoming.”
